New Museum Announces Culminating Demo Day for Inaugural Year of NEW INC: open to the public July 10 to 30, 2015.

New Museum Announces Culminating Demo Day for Inaugural Year of NEW INC, the First Museum-led Incubator for Art, Design, and Technology

Museum Will Partner with Red Bull Studios New York to Present an Interactive Showcase of Collaborative Projects Born from the NEW INC’s Founding Class

New York, NY…Lisa Phillips, Toby Devan Lewis Director, and Karen Wong, Deputy Director, cofounders of NEW INC, today announce the year-end programs for the inaugural class of the New Museum’s incubator for art, design, and technology. Led by NEW INC Director Julia Kaganskiy, select members will present their start-ups and key projects at NEW INC Demo Day taking place in the Museum’s theater on Tuesday, July 14, 2015. Later that evening, NEW INC will kick-off its partnership with Red Bull Studios New York with demonstrations by presenters and the debut of an interactive showcase of nine collaborative projects by NEW INC members.

“We’ve been a radical, future-leaning institution since our inception. Experimentation and risk-taking is part of our DNA, and incubating artists, curators, and cultural practitioners is something we’ve done throughout our forty-year history,” said Lisa Phillips.

NEW INC, the first museum-led incubator, is a shared workspace and professional development program supporting one hundred of New York’s top creative practitioners as they expand models and strategies for growing their businesses and develop new ideas at the intersection of culture, technology, and innovation. Conceived by the Museum in 2013 and launched in September 2014, the incubator is a not-for-profit platform that furthers the Museum’s ongoing commitment to “New Art and New Ideas.”

“NEW INC is a new paradigm in supporting creative practice operating at the forefront of emerging technology. Our community straddles art and business, culture and technology. We are incubating genre-bending work that doesn’t neatly fit into the white box, the black box, or the gift box,” said Julia Kaganskiy.

One of the incubator’s distinguishing elements is the collaborative, cross-disciplinary community it fosters. NEW INC’s partnership with Red Bull Studios New York challenged NEW INC members to create collaborative installations, experiences, tools, performances, and products that highlight the exceptional fluidity of its community. The resulting interactive showcase will put these new creative technologies on display for the public to see, touch, and taste from July 10 to 30, 2015. Several products developed at NEW INC will also be available for purchase through The Gift Shop at Red Bull Studios New York.

Haines Gallery is pleased to present The Collectors, a group exhibition bringing together three artists whose practices have their basis in the selection, accumulation, and documentation of objects, images, and experiences. Far greater than the sum of their parts, each of the works included in the show accrues meaning through inspired acts of gathering, arranging, and cataloging. In conjunction with The Collectors, Haines Gallery turns gallery two into a temporary outpost for Nile Sunset Annex, an ambitious artist-run space operating in a flat in Cairo, Egypt.

1887 Photo of Van Gogh, Take a look and judge for your self is is real

vangoughphoto
This group photo from 1887 is reportedly the first photo ever found of Vincent Van Goghafter he became an artist. If experts are correct, then the man third from the left (and smoking a pipe) is the legendary artist himself.

Over at the magazine L’Oeil de la Photographie (“The Eye of Photography”), French photo expert Serge Plantureux writes that the photo first came to his attention after it was brought to him by two individuals who had purchased it at an estate sale.
The owners had long been interested in 19th century artists, and they believed that they recognized faces in the photo, and “it was possible that one of the figures around the table was someone whose true face had .

Big things are happening in 2015. In Brooklyn, things are changing fast, and artist Meccas are being created. This rapid change spurs creativity and innovation, and in a few short years, Brooklyn has become a global brand. The eyes of the entire world are following Brooklyn to determine what happens next.

On June 25, 2015 Brooklyn comes to Westchester. 22 re-defining, Brooklyn artists, representing a sampling of the Brooklyn vanguard, will be exhibiting their newest work at Madelyn Jordon Fine Art in Scarsdale.  If you've been reading about all the dynamism taking place in this borough, this is your opportunity to get a firsthand experience of Brooklyn's pulse.

The exhibit title, I am What I am Not Yet, is inspired by a quote of the late philosopher of aesthetics, Maxine Greene.  Greene believed that artworks we encounter are "situated encounters", meaning, an audience of a given artwork apprehends that work in the light of their backgrounds, biographies, and experiences.  In I am What I am Not Yet, 22 Brooklyn based artists have each experienced Brooklyn through their own unique lens, and try to relate their own "situated encounters" in a way that, in aggregate, conveys a multi-faceted interpretation of Brooklyn.

*The gallery is accessible via the Metro North train, Scarsdale stop - one block walking distance from the Scarsdale station.

In a sweeping showcase of modern art, Nassau County Museum of Art opens two exhibitions, Selections from the Saltzman Family Collection and Long Island Collects Modern Art on Saturday, July 25. The exhibitions remain on view through November 8, 2015. The previous advance announcement of the showing of the Saltzman Family Collection is replaced by these two exhibitions that together fall under the title THE MODERNS: Chagall, Degas, Léger, Miró, Picasso and more….

THE MODERNS:  Selections from the Saltzman Family Collection continues celebrations of the Museum’s 25th anniversary year with an exhibition of early 20th-century modern art. The exhibition honors the Museum’s Founding President, the late Ambassador Arnold A. Saltzman, who during his life formed one of America’s great private collections of early modernist painting and sculpture. The exhibition includes works by well-known modernists such as Marc Chagall, Joan Miró, Constantin Brancusi, Edgar Degas, Robert Delaunay, Pablo Picasso, Fernand Léger and many others.

THE MODERNS:  Long Island Collects Modern Art, organized by guest curator Franklin Hill Perrell, draws together choice examples of 20th-century art from significant Long Island collections. This special presentation embraces a wide range of treasures by pioneering artists of the modernist era, among them Matisse, Monet, Renoir, Dali, Léger, Chagall, Miró, Toulouse-Lautrec and others.

The Museum is offering several public programs that will serve to enhance and illuminate the works on view. The Brown Bag Lecture series of exhibition talks will be presented on August 27September 24 and October 29. Jake Gorst, author of a book on his grandfather, modernist architect Andrew Geller, presents a talk on his famous relative on September 26. Art historian Miriam Brumer discusses works in the Saltzman family collection on October 17. On November 7, Shirley Romaine discusses Serge Sabarsky, who mounted exhibitions of German and Austrian Expressionist works beginning in 1989 when he was the first director of the newly privatized Nassau County Museum of Art. A 30-minute documentary, Edgar Degas of Dandies, Ballerinas and Women Ironing, screens daily. Please visit nassaumuseum.org/events for details and registration information.

Nassau County Museum of Art is located at One Museum Drive in Roslyn Harbor, just off Northern Boulevard, Route 25A, two traffic lights west of Glen Cove Road.
