Yumiko Kayukawa
Year of the Fire Horse

June 11th - July 12th, 2014

Reception for the Artist: June 11th 6-8pm

FOLEY gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition of painter Yumiko Kayukawa.

Year of the Fire Horse (Hinoe Uma) continues Kayukawa's exploration of pop culture, western fashion and the animal kingdom - all fused together with references to traditional Japanese customs and iconography.  Employing a traditional Ukiyo-e pallet with a contemporary Manga style of painting, Kayukawa delicately balances personal narrative with fantastical natural scenes.

The foreboding nature of her paintings are often masked by a playfulness and bold color strikes allowing deeper meaning through symbolism, thus revealing her underlying commentary on the environment, politics and contemporary culture.  In "Luxury Weapon," a young "Lara Croft" like figure displays a glowing Samurai blade defending a circle of elephants and rhinoceroses, their tusks and horns glowing, alluding to the luxury bounty that attracts the vision of poachers.

In Separation, a woman dressed in a black kimono sits in a darkened field surrounded by nurturing deer.  She gently holds a wrapped box in her lap. The presence of the box and black kimono are seen as symbols of death; the black kimono is worn during the ceremony of the deceased and the box holds the ashes of cremation.  The eyes of angry wolves encroach, foreshadowing her impending violent demise.

These paintings engage with an inviting, playful and whimsical façade.   Beneath, a message is delivered, wrapped in fluid poses, enchanting figures and intricate patterns. Her use of floating motifs and Kanji (Japanese characters) throughout her paintings provides a rhythm to the narrative.

Kayukawa grew up in the small town of Naie in Hokkaido, Japan. In her pristine and natural surroundings, Kayukawa found her love of animals and nature, which later became an important theme of her work. Throughout the years, Kayukawa has found inspiration from American pop culture such as Rock & Roll, film and fashion. Kayukawa's unique style arose from the fusion of these influential sectors of American pop culture with modern and traditional Japanese motifs.

Kayukawa graduated from Bisen Art School in Sapporo, Japan and currently works and resides in Seattle, Washington.  She has shown her work extensively both nationally and abroad since her debut U.S. solo exhibition in 2001.

Year of the Fire Horse will remain on view through July 12th.  Foley Gallery is openWednesday - Sunday, 12 - 6pm.

It is what enables these characters to see their everlasting duality—respect its presence—and finally to accept the intrinsic asymmetry of human nature."

VIMEO MAKES FIRST ORIGINAL PROGRAMMING INVESTMENT IN SERIES “HIGH MAINTENANCE”

VIMEO MAKES FIRST ORIGINAL PROGRAMMING INVESTMENT IN SERIES
“HIGH MAINTENANCE”

Acclaimed Web Series High Maintenance To Premiere Six New Episodes Exclusively On Vimeo On Demand

NEW YORK, May 29, 2014 – Vimeo today announced its first original programming project with the signing of High Maintenance, the critically acclaimed web series from the husband-and-wife team Katja Blichfeld and Ben Sinclair. As part of the deal, Vimeo will finance six new episodes to launch exclusively on Vimeo On Demand (vimeo.com/ondemand).

Award-winning casting director Katja Blichfeld (30 Rock), actor and editor Ben Sinclair (Delocated, 30 Rock, A Gifted Man, Law & Order: SVU, The Big C, Next Caller) and manager Russell Gregory at Regarding Entertainment first debuted High Maintenance on Vimeo in 2013. The 13-episode series, produced by Janky Clown Productions, follows a nameless cannabis dealer (Sinclair) as he delivers his product to clients with neuroses as diverse as the city they live in. Critics have regarded it as a “must watch” original web series for its well-crafted storylines and rotating cast that has included Downton Abbey’s Dan Stevens and comedian Hannibal Buress.

“We’re all huge fans of High Maintenance and couldn’t be happier to make our first original programming investment in a show that’s developed organically on Vimeo,” said Kerry Trainor, CEO, Vimeo. “Earlier this year we announced an initial $10 Million investment to license content for distribution on Vimeo On Demand from creators seeking alternatives to ad-based models and this is an exciting next step for the platform.”

"We're elated to be working directly with Vimeo to make our series with the creative control a television network would never afford us.  Vimeo is a platform that truly celebrates filmmaking," said series creators Blichfeld and Sinclair.

The new episodes are expected to launch later this year with the release schedule and pricing yet to be determined. In the meantime, viewers can catch the first 13 episodes of High Maintenance for free on Vimeo: https://vimeo.com/channels/highmaintenance.

Katja Blichfeld and Ben Sinclair are represented by Gregory McKnight at CAA, and Kim Jaime at Jackoway Tyerman.
